GREATER ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION FOR SONNING

New 7.5 tonne Signage

For several years, heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) have been illegally passing through the streets of Sonning in order to cross Sonning Bridge - despite the 7.5 tonne bridge weight limit. They are destructive to our ancient narrow streets and pavements, our many vulnerable listed buildings and they endanger the lives of pedestrians.

The Parish Council has been fighting for some time for robust warning signs on the A4 to alert HGV drivers. We are pleased to announce that a new traffic order, making the whole of Sonning north of the A4 a 7.5 tonne limit on environmental grounds, will come into force on 19th December 2008. New warning signs will be placed at the junction of all three approach roads from the A4. It will be illegal for any HGV to pass one of these signs unless it is for delivery or collection within Sonning. Those vehicles must then exit Sonning via the A4, not across Sonning Bridge; the 7.5 tonne limit on Sonning Bridge remains. It is hoped that this will serve to dissuade HGV drivers; moreover, this traffic order will make it easier to take enforcement action against vehicles passing illegally through Sonning Village.
